5th Grade

The last year of Knollwood School offers students many exciting opportunities and privileges. In Fifth Grade, our focus is on allowing students to become more independent learners and take more responsibility for their education.  Organizational skills are developed in order to prepare for middle school.

Please see the specific topics we cover below:

Reading/Writing Workshop:

Students work in both large and small groups to read and analyze texts. Our day consists of a daily read aloud, independent reading, a whole group mini lesson, and small strategy groups. By studying both narrative and informational texts, the students will learn to compare and contrast, identify themes/main ideas, analyze characters and points of view, and become aware of the techniques authors use. Students will use what they have learned in reading to develop their own writing. They will create narrative, informational, and literary analysis texts.

Students will review place value and numerical operations to begin the year.  Students will then brush up on their multiplication and division skills. We will then focus on operations with decimals. After the new year, students will practice adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions.  Guided math will be practiced on a daily basis during class time.  We will continue to use Reflex Math to develop fact fluency in the  basic operations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Social Studies:

We are excited to be using a new resource this year, Young Citizens, that provides a digital component. This resource can be accessed at home using Clever. Throughout the year we will cover topics related to geography, history and citizenship. These units include Native American Migration to North America, Exploration and Settlement of North America, Colonial America, the Founding of the United States and 21st Century Citizenship.

Students will engage in scientific inquiry and project based learning to explore science concepts.  They will practice the skills using online digital activities that accompany what they have learned.  Throughout the year students study Computer Science, Engineering & Design Thinking, Earth and Sun, Mixtures and Solutions, & Living Systems.
