ESL

You might be wondering what the ESL Program is, and why your child was invited to be a part of it. When you entered the district, you filled out a Home Language Survey as required by the state. There are important questions on this survey. Based on your child’s Home Language Survey form, we will determine if your child needs to be screened for ESL. This determination will be based on how often your child utilizes and understands any language(s) other than English. If he or she does qualify, a letter will be sent home indicating that your child has entered the ESL program.

Overview:

We use small group instruction based on the students’ instructional levels and grade levels. We use a push-in and pull-out model to provide your child with 30 minutes of instruction per day built into your child’s schedule. The lessons are based on reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and are also aligned with the standards as well as grade level content. Support will also be provided by modifying assignments and instruction in order to better meet the individual needs of the students.

Materials:

We use regular grade level curricula. We have access to the same textbooks and resources as the classroom teachers. We also use leveled readers and extension activities based on what the children are learning. Technology is an important component of the ESL curriculum. We use a variety of websites and software programs as it correlates to the grade level instruction, as well as the needs of each individual student.

Monitoring and Exit Criteria:

The mission of the ESL program is for the students to be successful in school and using the English language. Therefore, the students exit the program when their goals have been met in conversational and academic English. The students take the ACCESS test each year in January. Based on those results, as well as teacher recommendations, we will determine if the student is ready to exit the program. After students have exited the ESL program, teachers will monitor their academic progress to ensure that the student is meeting the academic goals and expectations of the grade level.
